We Beat The Street

Updated: Nov 17

Title: We Beat the Street

Author: Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, Rameck Hunt

Type of Book: Non-fiction, autobiography

This book is about three boys, Sampson Davis, George Jenkins and Remeck Hunt and it is about their daily struggles through life and how they have to deal with a lot of drug usage and gang violence in their neighborhood. Rameck, George, and Sampson could easily have followed their childhood friends into drug dealing, gangs, and prison. However, when a presentation at their school made the three boys aware of the opportunities available to them in the medical and dental professions, they made a pact among themselves that they would become successful doctors. My favorite character in the book was

My favorite character was Sampson because he was very committed to becoming a successful doctor and knew the right path to take if he wanted to become successful. For example, when Rameck and George started considering becoming professional rappers and meeting famous people like the notorious BIG and Tupac Shakur, he stayed on the right path and continued his studies.

I like this book because it shows the readers what the three friends had to go through to become successful. I also liked it because, after every chapter, they explained it in a short paragraph so readers could understand what the authors were trying to communicate.

My favorite part of the book was when Rameck went to jail for stabbing a crackhead who was doing drugs near a school because he didn't want the younger generation to be exposed to drugs. Rameck wrote, "I was terrified. I had gotten myself into a big mess, and it was horrible. I had almost taken the life of another human being. How could I have been so heartless and cruel?"

You should read this book because it teaches you that hey are always consequences to your actions and that you choose exactly where you want to end up in life, and it is not luck that makes people successful but consistent hard work. If You read this book and liked it, you should read: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park and All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely.
