Spy School

Updated: Nov 17

Title: Spy School

Author: Stuart Gibbs

Genre: Mystery

Spy School" by Stuart Gibbs is a mystery book about a boy named Ben Ripley. He lives a pretty much everyday life. He has a lot of friends and gets along with the kids at his school, except for the bullies. Until one day, Ben gets recruited into a special school, the CIA School of Espionage. Ben is very anxious about becoming a spy, but he must prove to his comrades and all the CIA agents in the school that he has what it takes to be a spy. Along the way, he makes many friends and some enemies. Unfortunately, an enemy agent working for SPYDER (an evil group of agents that plan to take down the CIA) is in the school and plans to destroy their school from within.  Ben must defeat the enemy agents with the help of his friends.

There are many memorable scenes in the book.  My favorite scene was when Ben and Erica entered the secret bunker given to her by her grandfather (the best spy of his time) to hide from the SPYDER agent. I felt sad for them because they had to stay in there for 24 hours, hiding from SPYDER with no food or water.  The scene (and others) is well written and would interest most readers.

Ben had trouble hiding from his family and friends that he was in a secret espionage school. So, he lied to them that he was going to a boring science school for gifted learners.  I liked this scene because if he hadn't told them that he was going to a boring science school, he would have gotten into serious trouble with the CIA, leading the CIA to think he was a traitor. Ben Ripley is my favorite character in the book because he is very friendly, outgoing, and always gives people second chances.  I like Erica Hale because she is a very talented spy who has saved Ben from Spyder various times.

"Spy School" is not just another book. It's a hilarious and adventurous journey that will keep 8 to 12-year-olds hooked from the first page to the last. Stuart Gibbs' amazing storytelling, filled with cliffhangers and action-packed scenes, makes this book a perfect choice for young readers. If you're looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is it. If you read Spy School and read it, you should read these books:
