October Author of the Month

Updated: Nov 17

Shirley Jackson is a celebrated American author born on December 14, 1916, and she passed away on August 8, 1965. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on through her books and short stories in different genres like horror and fiction. Jackson’s most notable writings include The Haunting of Hill House, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and the short story "The Lottery," which I have recently read and will review. All of which explore themes of conformity, isolation, and the uncanny. Her unique narrative style and character development have left a profound mark on modern literature. My favorite story of hers is The Lottery due to its dark theme which kept me thinking long after I finished reading it.

I chose Shirley Jackson as the author of the month for two main reasons. First, her ability to foreshadow what will happen at the end of her stories, for example on the Lottery at the beginning of the book school children were picking up stones after they finished school and at first, I thought it was for fun or to play catch or to build something using them. But when I finished the short story I later realized that whoever won the lottery would get stoned to death. She also writes about horror which is perfect for October, and since today is Halloween.

Secondly, I picked her for the author of the month spotlight because of her pioneering influence on the horror genre. Shirley Jackson’s writing has inspired countless authors and has paved the way for a new kind of psychological horror that delves deeply into character and theme rather than relying solely on traditional scares. Her unique perspective and bold narrative choices continue to resonate with readers today, I also liked how in The Lottery she picked a topic like a Lottery which in most human minds is something very positive "winning money" and changed it to something so dark like getting stoned do to death by three hundred people including the winners family and kids. When I finished reading The Lottery it reminded me of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Shirley Jackson is an extraordinary author whose innovative contributions have had a lasting impact on both horror and literature as a whole. Her compelling storytelling and keen insights into human behavior make her an exceptional choice for author of the month.
